The Revolution
The Revolutionary war was devastating to Native Americans, especially the Iroquois Nation. The six nations were separated for the first time since their inception around 1200 AD. The Mohawk, Seneca, Onondaga and Cayuga sided with the British. They realized that if the13 colonies were successful their land and treaties with the British would be in trouble if not upheld by a new government. The Oneida and Tuscarora sided with the 13 colonies, but this was to no avail; after the Colonies were successful they still abolished the treaties and took their traditional lands. Siding with the British did not prove to be helpful either as post war the British gave the Iroquois no representation in the peace treaties after the war. This resulted in the British retaining some land but left the Iroquois to fight for what was left.
