Red Cloud (Mahpiya Luta)
Red Cloud 1822-1909 was born near North Platte, Nebraska. He was an Oglala and Brule Lakota. His father died when he was young therefore he was raised by his uncle Old Chief Smoke. From an early age he showed signs of great leadership and he fought in many battles. As Chief, he gained the most notoriety for the war that took place in 1866 to 1868 called Red Cloud’s War. It was fought over Powder River Country in northeastern Wyoming and southern Montana. The dispute between Red Cloud and his allied tribes was sparked mostly over a trail that went through their territory and prime hunting grounds called the Bozeman Trail. As settlers and US military forces started to gain more of a presence in the area Red Could decided to defend his territory. He held off the US military for two years. The largest blow dealt to the US military was during the Fetterman Fight on Dec 21, 1866, where 81 US officers were killed in battle. This is one of the biggest defeats of the US military on the Great Plains prior to The Battle of Little Bighorn.
The US and Red Cloud’s Allies (Oglala, Miniconju, Brule, Yankton Dakota & Arapaho) signed a peace Treaty on April 29, 1868. The Treaty guaranteed the rights and ownership to the sacred Black Hills. It also included land and hunting rights in Wyoming, Montana and South Dakota and closed the Bozeman Trail; ending Red Cloud’s War.
