Lozen
A Chiricahua Apache Warrior and Medicine Woman
After escaping San Carlos Reservation (Hells 40 acres) in Arizona; She earned her place in history first by aiding her brother Victorio and later Geronimo in successful raids against the U.S. and Mexican Armies In 1877-1885. Lozen was also a prophet given the power to locate the enemy. She would Pray to the Apache God Ussen. She would outstretch her arms and pray she would feel a presence in the direction from which the enemy was located. This is her prayer translated into English.
“Upon this Earth on which we live
Ussen has Power. This Power is mine
for locating the enemy. Search for the enemy
which only Ussen the Great can show me.”

This power played a vital part in their ability to consistently win battles. She fought bravely along side the male Apache warriors. Victorio said in a famous quote “ Lozen is my right hand, strong as a man, braver than most, cunning in strategy. Lozen is a shield to her people.”
This short description does not touch even a portion of her story. She is distinguished woman. Known for her bravery, strategy, and skillful tactics as a Warrior in battle; and her role as a Medicine Woman. We hope that this will inspire you to look more into her remarkable story.
