Tui Manu’a One of the oldest chief titles in the Samoan Islands is Tui Manu’a. Their lineage was said to have controlled a large network of islands not just the Manu’a islands. Information retained through verbal history states that their empire reached as far as Fiji and Tokelau. They acquired their power by controlling trade between the islands. The Manu’a lineage is still respected today. All though no one holds the title today, Tui Manu’a Elisala was the last to hold the title and he died in 1909. Tui Manu’a Elisala pledged to be the last holder of the title after the signing of the Treaty of Cession of Manu’a. The United States no longer recognizes any chief located in American Samoa
