On September 21, 1866 at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas the 10th Cavalry was formed. It was the first all African American peacetime regiment ever created. They were also known as the “Buffalo Soldiers.” There are a several stories on how they received this name; all of which are associated with their encounters with various Native American tribes. It has been said that they were given the name “Buffalo Soldiers” because of their fierce fighting abilities. Others state it is because their hair was similar to the Buffalo; or possibly it was their buffalo coats they wore in the winter. NMAAHC stated that Black soldiers used military service as a strategy to obtain equal rights as citizens. The Buffalo Soldiers served the US Military west of the Mississippi because most whites did not want an armed black soldier anywhere near their communities. Ironically, their efforts to obtain equality was used to subjugate and police another oppressed people- Native Americans. In Americas attempt to control the west.
